the PROBLEMs with hydraulics

Hydraulic drive systems are a type of transmission that use incompressible fluids to conveniently transfer energy to various linear applications requiring high forces and power density. Fluids of a hydraulic drive system are pressurized by a pump, which is commonly driven by a combustion engine or electric motor. The pressurized fluid is then directed through a series of pipes, filters, accumulators and valves to guide and control the pressurized fluid to the appropriate linear or rotary actuators. Hydraulic technology can be configured into a wide range of applications that demand high power density and reliability. Within certain demanding applications, downtime repairs can be prohibitively expensive. Common indicators of hydraulic problems can include slow or erratic operation, elevated temperatures, and noise. Causes of poor hydraulic performance can include the introduction of moisture, air, or debris as well as excessive accumulation of heat in the working fluid.

The difficulties surrounding hydraulic operation and maintenance are as follows:

Leakages - Hydraulic actuators require complicated plumbing, maintenance and frequent visual checks since the likelihood of oil leakages is high. High temperature environments can cause damage to the machine if it’s left unmonitored.

Number of Components - Though hydraulic cylinders themselves are simple and compact, the supporting systems that deliver pressurized fluids are immensely complicated.

Dead Batteries - Given average hydraulic system efficiencies, switching away from internal combustion engines poses a challenge for battery storage technologies to achieve diesel-equivalent shift operating time between charging events.

Control - Hydraulic actuators are hard to control accurately and may suffer from “stick-slip”. Jerky or hesitant motion is often seen at the actuator when transitioning between still and moving.

Fire Hazard - Pressurized oil in hydraulic systems presents a considerable fire hazard, particularly where ignition sources are present. When hydraulic oil is released under pressure, it often results in an atomized spray or mist of oil droplets that may extend as far as 10 meters from the break.

Cost - Although the cost of the initial components is relatively low, the cost of installating, maintaining, and powering hydraulic systems can be very high.
